« Back Sanjay Nirupam inaugrating 'Rajiv Gandhi Cup' football tournament at Malad-Mumbai 13 Dec, 2009

Shri Sanjay Nirupam, Member of Parliament inaugurated the Rajeev Gandhi Cup-2009, football Tournament   at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Ground, Orlem, Malad (West) on Sunday   13th December at   7.30 pm with an opening shot into the goal. The tournament was declared open by Fr. Salvador, Parish Priest  of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Orlem.  Shri Aslam Sheikh, MLA, Shri Naushad Moosa, Mr. Gavin Ferreira and Shri Jacinto D’Silva (international players)  along with a host of dignitaries were present.   Sixteen teams from the North Mumbai Parliamentary Constituency will participate in the tournament.   Several prominent Footballers  including national level players will play for the teams.   The tournament will be an annual feature and the Rajiv Gandhi Cup will be a rotating trophy.   Many other attractive prizes like Man of the Match for each match, Man of the Tournament, Most Promising Player of the Tournament etc., will be given.  During the intervals and between matches, spectators would be given prizes for scoring in an empty goal from around 60 yards.  The floodlit tournament was witnessed yesterday by several hundred spectators.  The first match was won by Golden Sports Club from Malvani by a solitary goal scored by Karan against the Orlem ‘A’ Team and second match was won by The Orlem “B” Team by way of tie-breaker and sudden death (9-8) against Malad East Team. 
The semi-finals will be held on Saturday 19th December, 2009 and the finals on Sunday, 20th Dec.2009.  Shri Praful Patel, Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation and Officiating President of the All India Football Federation will be the Chief Guest for the semi-finals on 19th Dec.2009.

Shri Sanjay Nirupam, Member of Parliament himself a sportsman and a great lover of sports will conduct this tournament every year as part of his agenda to promote sports in general and Football in particular especially in the North Mumbai Constituency.  Further there are plans to start a full-fledged academy to identify and nurture talent from amongst children and youth.   The academy would seek partnership with some international football team so that training provided will match the best in the world.   In this way, we intend to encourage and motivate youngsters to become national and international level footballers.     Shri Praful Patel has promised full support to Shri Sanjay Nirupam in his endeavour to promote Football in Mumbai City.   We enclose herewith few photographs.
